THE CERTIFICATE OF ADVANCED ENGLISH (CAE)
The University of Cambridge provides worldwide known exams and tests for learners of the English language. The British Council in Poland organizes these exams for learners in Poland.
CAE is an advanced-level exam at Level C1 of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This means that if you represent Level C1, you can:
- communicate fluently in all aspects of everyday life
- understand complex opinions
- effectively participate at official meetings
- read quickly enough to manage with university or training courses
- use abstract expressions and understand nuances of meanings and opinions
- discuss on subjects related to all aspects of life, such as work, science, culture, art, literature, history, social events, politics, media information, etc.
- write professional letters, reports, works and essays, using fluent written language and clearly expressing standpoints
- The Reading Part (ca 1 hour)
- The Writing Part (ca 1,5 hours)
- The Use of English Part (ca 1 hour)
- The Listening Part (ca 40 min.)
- The Speaking Part (ca15 min.)
You will work on texts taken from all kinds of the press. You will answer questions to these texts provided in the form of multiple choice and filling gaps or you will match various statements or titles or parts of given wirtten sections to these texts.
The Writing PartThis part is to prove that you know how to write reports, essays, letters, articles, letters of application, etc. You will do it based on reading of various texts such as advertisements, reports, articles, etc. Having a variety of multiple choice texts, you will choose a subject to write on.
The Use of English PartWith the help of a multiple choice of possible answers (or prompts), you will have to fill in gaps in a text. Further, you will do the same with another text but choices will not be provided. You need to find out the right word yourself. Next, in order to check your vocabulary, you will have to fill in gaps in a set of 3 sentences with the same missing word. You will also have to rewrite sentences adding key words and preserving their meaning.
The Listening PartYou will have to choose proper answers or wording to multiple choice questions related to a recorded material.
The Speaking PartYou perform your task in a pair with another learner, first telling about e.g. yourself and next replying questions of the second person; or you two describe or compare photos or pictures, answering to an examiner’s questions. You will also have a discussion with the second candidate on presented pictures.
